In the ever-evolving world of social media and content creation, it’s important for coaches and course creators to stay ahead of the game. With the recent buzz about TikTok potentially being banned, many entrepreneurs are looking for new platforms to transition to and perform well. If you find yourself in this situation, fear not! I have some valuable tips and strategies that will help you navigate this transition smoothly.
1. Before you move, Create a Presence on the New Platform
Before you start following people and sending them to your page on the new platform, it’s crucial to create a post or two first. Take one of your existing posts from TikTok or any other platform and copy it onto the new one. This serves two purposes: firstly, it shows that you’re a real person with content already established, which can increase trust among potential followers. Secondly, it gives people an idea of what kind of content they can expect from you.
I recently followed a few people based on recommendations on Facebook, only to find their profiles completely blank on the new platform. Don’t make this mistake – start off on the right foot by posting something!
2. Utilize Your Website
This should have been #1 but then you might have stopped reading 🤣, but really I can’t say this enough as entrepreneurs who have experienced multiple platform migrations over the years, we’ve learned that our website remains constant amidst all these changes.
To make your transition smoother across different social media platforms, start putting some of your content directly onto your website.
[HINT: I used SEO Assist’s Repurpose Social Media Flow to write this blog from 3 post I did on FB yesterday, see it in action here: https://youtu.be/nKuCqANJ6sc?si=RaC68HLHUAHgOK_3]
By doing so, not only do you make yourself more searchable no matter where people go online but also protect your intellectual property rights as well, as US intellectual property protections may not be present in every platform out there.
3. Consider Alternative Platforms
I’ve seen a lot of content creators talking about going to Lemon 8 or Red Note. While Red Note may seem like an attractive alternative due to its similarities with TikTok remember it’s still owned by a company similar to TikTok’s parent company Byte Dance and it could be subject to the same law used to ban TikTok. Security-wise, migrating solely to a foreign platform you lose many of the intellectual property and privacy protection we have here in the US, so if you care about protecting your IP it’s not the move.
Instead of putting all your eggs in one basket, consider exploring other platforms such as Fanbase, Blue Sky, or even going back to old faithfuls like YouTube and LinkedIn. (I’ll be on YouTube and Fanbase @girlgetvisible on both)
Diversifying your presence across multiple platforms can provide you with a safety net and ensure that your content reaches a wider audience.
Now that we’ve discussed these valuable lessons and strategies for transitioning to new platforms successfully, let me share a personal story. When I first heard about the potential ban on TikTok, I was initially worried about losing the audience I had built on the platform. However, by implementing the tips mentioned above, I was able to smoothly begin to transition my content to another platform while maintaining engagement with my followers. (I even earned my first $.01 on Fanbase LOL. It’s not a lot but given I’ve been active less than a week and I only have 5 posts, I see potential there)
